A News Sonnet A Day for April 2010: 5

I've set myself a goal for National Poetry Month this year: Compose a sonnet based on a science-themed news story each day.

Today's installment takes its cue from "Rare frogs find a military home" by T. DeLene Beeland.

Military Objective

When nights grow warm and rain begins to fall,
Where bombs explode and troops prepare for war,
Amphibians in mud will heed the call
To march across Fort Bragg a mile or more.

Amidst munitions depots, breeding ponds
Await the Carolina gopher frogs.
Their loss of habitat has forged these bonds.
It's why biologist Nick Haddad slogs

To catch and tag the threatened young adults
Who blunder down into his bucket traps.
Then with Defense Department he consults
In hopes to fill their population gaps.

They struggle on the Southern coastal plain,
Protected in the woods where soldiers train.
