A News Sonnet A Day for April 2010: 21

I've set myself a goal for National Poetry Month this year: Compose a sonnet based on a science-themed news story each day.

Today's installment takes its cue from "A Brain-Recording Device that Melts into Place" from the National Institutes of Health, via Ariel Schwartz at Inhabitat ("Scientists Develop Silk Implant That Melts Onto Brain’s Surface").

A Head For Fashion

Electrodes are implanted in the brain
To help treat neurological distress.
And now, to fit its convoluted plain,
Gray matter gets to wear a silken dress.

The tissue-fitting silk is ultra-thin
and snug as shrink wrap, minimizing harm.
It captures better signals from the din,
Responding well in cases of alarm.

Past rigid grids and wire that can stick,
This pioneering prototype evolves.
Electrodes of five hundred microns thick
Are printed on a surface that dissolves,

Improving ways that brain cells can be read.
It's like a great big hug inside your head.
